Muaythai is the National Sport of Thailand and is part of its cultural heritage where it has strong Buddhist links and is a fighting technique born out of combat reality which has been proven on the battlefield and passed down through generations for the last 2000 years. Known as the science of eight limbs, Muaythai uses the knees and elbows as well as kicks and punches. It is considered by many to be the ultimate in hand-to-hand fighting.

Originally this warrior art saw the use of weapons as well as empty handed self defence on battlefields. The art is known to be as much as 3000 years old. In the early days fights were decided on when first blood was drawn and sometimes went on to the death. The fighters wore cotton cloth wrapped around their hands which was dipped in glue and rolled in sand and broken glass.

A big transformation took place in the 1930's when boxing gloves were introduced and the fights began to be fought over rounds with rests between. A system of weight categories was introduced with fists, feet, knees and elbows permitted Thai boxing is now hugely popular in Thailand with daily fights in the main stadiums in Bangkok and on TV.

Known as the “Science of Eight Limbs” it is one of the oldest combat systems ever devised. Practitioners develop defensive and offensive skills utilizing a wide variety of punches, kicks, knees and elbows executed with deadly accuracy and explosive power. It is for these reasons among others, that many now see Muaythai as the most practical and effective form of self-defence, a standard by which others are judged.
